For example, "Another older fellow (61) told me he was suffering from some kind of intestinal parasite (probably picked up in India)." Of course if you pop the word parasite into your favoriate search engine you'll soon learn that many believe this is a big problen even for those living in the good ole United States.

Another disease they mention is "if you do get a fungal infection, expose it to sunlight, keep it dry and ventilated, clean with disinfectant and dry well.". They point out the best thing is to do what the locals do and wear loose fitting clothes.

Of course, doing what the locals do is what might lead you into some of the problems. For example in many places the locals will tell you it's ok, you can drink the water. However, you may become unsettled or worse from the water. Although perfectly safe for the local's whose bodies are used to it, you might have a different reaction. Of course if you are planing to living somewhere it would be a good idea to slowly get used to the water.

The Bali Blog reminds you that "intestinal worms can enter your body, through under cooked meat, or through your skin.". Make sure you are comfortable with everything you eat and if you are not feeling well remind your Dr of the possibilities of parasites, worms, fungus or other problems that might be related to your stay outside the USA.

Read more at the BaliBlog
---
Expat Blogs

Expats in Latin America

Expats in Latin America

Expats in Latin America, keep a wary eye on your surroundings. Thousands of men have babies with teenage girls here, and refuse to pay child suport. Break ins are so common that the houses here either look like holding cells, or they have armed guards in front of each apartment complex. And it's unsafe to walk at night. The cops here are paid $250 a month. They don't report murders. But somehow, it's not a "good defensive practice" to punch a street punk in the nose if he may be threatening the life of a tourist (you!) ... because he might sue you?
Costa Rica Jones
Emphasis mine.

All I can say is that is one hell of a sales pitch for anyone even remotely considering...

Living in Costa Rica as an Expat!

You can discuss this and other Costa Rica Topics

Uruguay Living

I found the Uruguay Living Blog in the Expats Blog Directory

David seems to be one of the best bloggers on expat issues in the countries he's lived in, now Uruguay.

If you have an expat blog it would be great to see it in that directory as I like to read about all the neat places to live and how people fare.
